Welcome to Day 4 of our Lenten Bible study. Today, we will explore the theme of fear using the story of Naaman’s healing in 2 Kings 5:1-14. Additionally, we’ll draw inspiration from the science fiction novel Dune and the wise words of Stan Lee to understand how facing fear can lead to personal growth and courage.
Scripture Reading: 2 Kings 5:1-14 (NIV)
Reflection: Naaman, a commander in the Syrian army, was a powerful and respected man, but he was afflicted with leprosy, a disease that struck fear into the hearts of many. His journey to find healing took an unexpected turn when he listened to the advice of a young Israelite slave girl and ultimately followed the instructions of the prophet Elisha. Naaman had to face his fear of the unknown, of trusting in a foreign prophet and obeying unconventional instructions. It required humility and a willingness to confront his own vulnerability.
Connection to Dune:
In Frank Herbert’s Dune, the character Paul Atreides speaks the Bene Gesserit litany against fear: “I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer…” This echoes the biblical theme of facing fear with courage. Like Naaman, Paul had to confront fear and uncertainty, recognizing that only by facing it head-on could he overcome its paralyzing effects.
Connection to Stan Lee’s Quote: Stan Lee’s words remind us that heroes, despite their imperfections, show us the way to face fear and injustice. They teach us that courage is not the absence of fear but the ability to act in the face of it. Naaman, in his journey, and the heroes Stan Lee speaks of, demonstrate that it’s okay to be vulnerable, to acknowledge our fears, and still move forward with conviction.

- Identify a fear or challenge in your life. How can you face it with courage, acknowledging vulnerability but moving forward in faith?
- Share personal experiences of overcoming fear with the group. How did faith and courage play a role in those moments?
- Pray for each other, asking for strength to face fears and uncertainties, trusting in God’s guidance.
Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for the stories of courage and faith in your Word. Help us to face our fears with the same trust and reliance on your guidance. May we find strength in vulnerability and discover that, in facing fear, we grow in courage and faith. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
