Lent Paradox 6: Community in Division

As we embark on this Lenten study, our inspiration stems from the pages of J.R.R. Tolkien’s masterwork, “The Fellowship of the Ring.” The narrative unfolds with a diverse group convening at the Council of Elrond in Rivendell, facing the imminent threat of the Dark Lord Sauron. This literary journey serves as our guide as we explore the paradox of discovering strength in community during the Lenten season.

  1. In the fellowship of the Ring, reminiscent of the body of Christ, diverse individuals unite to form a cohesive whole. 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 speaks to the unity and diversity within Christian communities, emphasizing the interconnectedness of believers.
  2. Drawing parallels with the challenges faced by the Fellowship, this passage calls for humility and a selfless, unified spirit within Christian communities. Philippians 2:2-4 prompts reflection on how we, like the Fellowship, can put the interests of others above our own.
  3. Love is presented as the binding force within the Christian community, much like the unifying thread that held the Fellowship together. Colossians 3:14 contemplation on the power of love to overcome differences and foster unity.

Questions for Reflection:

  1. The Fellowship overcame diverse backgrounds to form a united front at the Council of Rivendell. How can Christian communities draw inspiration from this example to navigate their own diversity and forge unity?
  2. Reflect on the roles of leadership and guidance within the Council at Rivendell. How can Christian leaders emulate the wisdom and inclusivity demonstrated by Elrond in fostering unity within their communities?
  3. How did the Fellowship’s journey exemplify the paradox of strength in vulnerability? How might this concept be applied to the Lenten season and the Christian community’s collective journey toward Easter?
  4. Consider the sacrifices made by individual members of the Fellowship for the greater good. How does selflessness contribute to the strength of a Christian community, especially during the Lenten period of reflection and repentance?
  5. How can the Lenten season serve as a metaphorical Council at Rivendell for your Christian community, providing an opportunity for collective discernment, repentance, and preparation for the challenges ahead?

Triune God, as we embark on this Lenten journey, we seek Your guidance and grace. Teach us to embrace the paradox of finding strength in community, just as the Fellowship did at the Council of Rivendell. Grant us humility, love, and selflessness, that we may reflect the unity and diversity of the body of Christ. May this season of reflection deepen our connection with You and with one another. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
