Inside a 1970s recording studio, Alice is forced to confront the legacy of her mother, Lorna Wu. What Alice had understood as obsession and abandonment is revealed to be something more complicated: Lorna’s version of the Ballad was a protection spell, sung again and again in the hope that her love might continue to shelter her daughter.
We explore inherited trauma and the stories families pass from one generation to the next. Are we destined to carry the curses of those who came before us, or can understanding the past help us transform what we have inherited?
Music becomes more than entertainment in this episode. It is memory, ritual, resistance and protection. The coven cannot defeat the curse through individual power; they must listen to one another, find the rhythm and perform the song together. Their separate voices become powerful when they form a chorus.
Alice’s story invites us to consider the different ways love can survive separation and death. Lorna could not remain with her daughter, but she left behind a song capable of reaching Alice long after her own voice had fallen silent. Like prayer, sacred story and communal song, music carries love beyond the limits of a single life.
The episode also deepens the mystery surrounding Agatha and Rio. Their shared history suggests intimacy, betrayal and grief, while Teen’s injury briefly reveals the compassion Agatha usually keeps carefully concealed.
Drawing upon faith, fiction and lived experience, we ask whether healing means escaping our past or learning to hear it differently. Perhaps some of what we have called a curse may also contain the unfinished song of someone who was trying, however imperfectly, to keep us safe.
